TSW School Project in Kathmandu:

Kathmandu is the Capital city of Nepal where around 15 millions Populations are living. Among them more than 80 percent are migrated from outside of Kathmandu since many years back in search of different opportunity but the rate of migrants dramatically increased within last 12 years of insurgency periods because of the security concerns. Besides this reason there are many other reasons like those who became homeless due to Natural disasters, and other reason they are here in capital city in search of job, shelter, security. So in summery we can say that so many of the people who really have nothing in this earth are here in Kathmandu in search of some hope for their future but the real situation here in capital is just opposite of what they have dreamed about because Nepalese government couldn’t fulfil the needs of these thousands of people and that made their situation even worse

It is a fact that you can see number of schools in Kathmandu but the other fact the many people can’t see from outside is that those schools are far beyond the capacity of normal peoples affordable capacity.  Even the Nepalese government had declared the free education up to grade 5 the plan is not properly implemented so that is the reason many school age children are left out of school and that is the reason of increasing number of child labour, street children in capital city. Because of the increasing number of this kind of children the anti-social activities like robbery, murder, kidnapping, are increasing day by day in capital city.

Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Training in 30 Schools:

Taksindu Social Welfare is requesting funds to support for two more additional VDC PTA training along with the refreshment training in Taksindu VDC’s Schools in 2010. We would like to recall back our first PTA training in Taksindu VDC in 2007, which took place with the support of dzi which was became very successful brining the involvement of local community in the school forming PTA group in each school providing three-days training at each school with two days for the entire community & teachers & one day for the PTA itself. These trainings emphasized implementing systems of accountability for both Parents and teachers, establishing local fundraising programs for schools, and the importance of education for all children. After the training is completed, we provided each school with a (Tin trunk library) a portable library that includes a variety of teaching materials, posters, and a small library of books, which greatly supported for improvement of quality education in remote Nepal Schools students & teachers.

Therefore, PTA training help to build the very strong relationship between Parents –Teachers & students in which parents are more activated for the regulation of school management with the assurance of long term sustainability of school with quality education, developing some local level fund raising strategy and establishing transparency accountability in school. The Nepal Government has also brought this rule in every school but is implemented only in few school and very less parents are aware. Which lack the support from the community level & create gap between parents & teachers. Which result in lack the quality education for the children, transparency of accountability in school, support for the school at local level & ownership of local community for the school.

Problem in remote Nepal School:

In the school of remote region of Nepal teachers are tend to hold a position of great esteem and power within the community. These teachers are often the only members of the community with a regular salary and a formal education and tend to find themselves placed in remote communities far from their own homes and families. This combined with little supervision and accountability results in very high rates of teacher absenteeism and poor performance while at work. On the other side of the coin, parents often don¹t see the long-term value in ensuring that their children attend school and pay attention to their studies. Children often miss school to work as child labourers along the trekking routes or in the fields at home.

Our PTA trainning will benefit 30 schools in three VDC including more then 4500 students of remote Nepal School

Women Empowerment Project:

Taksindu is located in the southern part in Everest region on foot print of Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the most beautiful and remote village of Nepal, Taksindu is name of village development committee which contains nine small villages including very old Buddhist Monastery where more than 50 household are residence. Where we TSW completed our pure drinking water project & public toilet projects in 2009 as per the highest demand of local community.

Waku VDC and Basa VDC are next VDC to Taksindu VDC in Solukhumbu district of Everest Zone, situated in southern part of Everest region, each of these VDC is combination of 9 wards. Basa VDC is 5 days walk from Jiri road & 2 days walk from Lower Solu Airport Phaplu and district headquarter and Waku VDC is 7days walk from Jiri road and 2 days walk from Phaplu airport. This is inhabitant of extremely poor community with highest population of  Rai, Dalits (untouchable) Mangar Tamang and Chhetri ethnic group. In Waku VDC TSW had completed a primary school project in 2009.

According to survey conducted by TSW in lower Solu region we identified that these are the VDCs that need so much help and we can do many things that could change their life.

Here people are very co-operative, creative, honest and hard working but almost every single person’s life is depended on the agriculture and some are seasonal trekking porters or load carrier from Jiri to Namche which is even not sufficient to meet the half of the year’s family need. Especially men work hard on the farm and field but every single women there is housewife so they are totally far away from income generating skills that keeps them isolated from any kind of decision making activities and social networking.

As women constitute the half of the population of the earth so do these 3 VDCs. And the vast majority of the world's poor are women. Two-thirds of the world's illiterates are female. Out of the millions of school age children not in school, the majority are girls. And our survey shows the similar result in these VDCs.

We believe when women are supported and empowered, all of society benefits. Their families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and incomes increase. In short, communities become more resilient. Women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfil this responsibility. Our programs aim to support women through skill training to restore their potentialities and build their capacity in society for innovative economic activities.

We TSW had identified various needs of the local women in these three VDC’s but among all of them we prioritize the need of their empowerment as a first need, because when women are aware of their potentialities and needs, when they will be capable of making some living on their own they will have confidence of taking part in different decision making activities that ultimately will bring change in the socio-economic structure of entire community.

That’s the reason we would like to enrol at least 1 woman from each Ward in skill training to explore their potentiality to meet their own need. By providing this training at first we are focusing on two aspects. 1) Manufacture school uniform by trained women or opportunities for self-employment.2) Meet the need of school uniform in more than 10 schools from each VDC with thousands of students.

Why this project is so important?

Due to the complex geographical structure the people in this region are far away from the access to health, education, transportation, clean drinking water and other basics of their life. The villages are scattered on the hilly slopes. The region is 2 days walk from the district headquarter where they can have some small shops and market to meet their daily needs.

Even though there are few schools in the VDC and most of the primary level education is for free of cost, many students do not attend the school due to various reasons. Among the many reasons one of the most common reason for not attending school is they don’t have school uniforms and they are not allowed in school without uniforms. It is interesting to mention that in the entire VDC there is no facility for making school uniforms. So to fulfil the need of school uniform they are compelled to travel for 4 days (two ways). Even though they reach the district headquarter for uniforms they must wait for a day or 2 or even more to get the uniform ready. Only parents can’t go and get uniforms as they need the measurements of their children. So more than 90% parents are not ready to waste their 4-6 days time and money for mere school uniform.   Because for the moment their labours is more important than their children education and this is one of the major reason of child labour in remote Nepal using their children in the farm, looking after cattle, taking care of siblings as well as child porter with their fathers and relatives.

So this is a simple reason that is keeping many students out of school and forcing them to be child labour, then we realize that if some among the hundreds of unemployed women could make school uniform in their own village that will solve the need of school uniform in one hand and it really helps to reduce the child labour in another hand also they can earn good amount of money that will helpful for family support. After this skill training not only school uniform but they will be able to meet the need of various dresses at local level.

Taksindu Social Welfare seeks to promote basic standard of quality life through education and self employment. So, TSW aims to empower women in all phases of life through skill training thus building self confidence and developing leadership that helps women in the community to utilize their potentiality and creativity to make a change in their own society because economic self-sufficiency is a critical step for women to take their rightful place in the lives of their families and communities.

Objectives:

Below some of the objectives mentioned:

Specific objectives:

·    To provide the opportunity for skill building and self employment for women and adolescents.

·    To reduce the child labour.

·    To strengthen women’s existing skills and to introduce new skills in traditional and non-traditional fields so women can access future employment opportunities.

·    To meet the basic needs of community at community level through community people (involving women).

·    To uplift the socio-economic condition of women through income generating skill trainings.

·    To enrol the maximum number of young agers in school.

·    To enhance women participation in social networking and decision making.

·    To link the rural women with the world of technology.

General Objectives:

·   To provide better life for more than thousands of women.

·      To bring the positive changes and development in the
 community.

·      To provide basic needs of local people.

Implementing Strategy

Taksindu Social Welfare believes the community involvement is powerful tools in generating resources that are essential for any community based projects. The program will mobilize the mothers groups, community member, school, and parents whereas TSW will only supply with the necessary materials like swing machine, and trainer to provide training for market based skill training to local interested women. This will not only reduce the overall project cost, but building community investment and support in the project will ensure local ownership and long-term assurance, in this regards we will be forming interested women committee from same community through the overall discussion of communities including community people, mothers group and other interested people and self help group under the facilitation of TSW by which support us more to reach at our mission through chain of relationship at every individual bodies.

Our first phase of the market based skill training will be over by the 6 months of period and in second phase we will provide a Microcredit training to facilitate those women who want to start their own business for the first time. This Microcredit Program provides vital income-generation support to some of the most socially excluded women.

Expected Outcome:

  ·   By the end of the project TWS expect the following
outcomes.

  ·    In the first phase more than 10 women will be employed
in their own community and they will be able to provide
school uniforms from class 1 to 10 in more than 10
 different schools at each VDC.

  ·    In the second phase these trained women will conduct
 another training program in their
neighbour VDC and
that will benefit next 10 women.

  ·    None of the students will be left out of school due to
 lack of school uniforms.

  ·    There will be less child labour.

  ·     This training course will not only provide women a new
skill but also motivate to seek new opportunity to
  enhance income.

  ·    Their success-story can motivate many other women to
become a part of these kinds of trainings.

 ·      Finally these women producers will be linked with local
market and their local product will be launched in the
market with full confidence and courage.
